The metro area that makes up the middle of North Carolina is ideal for the outdoors enthusiast. Raleigh RV parks and Raleigh campgrounds are primarily scattered around the outside of the city, but there are a few in the town of Auburn, to the south.
Auburn is really the gateway to the rural reaches of the region and provides visitors with easy access to nearby natural attractions like White Deer Nature Center and Lake Benson Park. To the north, those who love lake life, but not the buzz of motorboat engines, will enjoy the massive Falls Lake State Recreation area which forbids boats with gasoline engines. By far, however, the most popular area for RV life and camping is to the west of Raleigh and to the south of Durham and Chapel Hill, at the equally massive Jordan Lake. The town of Moncure has a few popular campgrounds and RV parks along Route 1, and there are plenty of other options at the north end of the lake near Chapel Hill.
The whole of the Raleigh metro area is outstanding for day trips, but when time and weather permits it, locals like to venture even further west, towards Charlotte, North Carolina, where the Uwharrie National Forest and Lake Norman State Park offer visitors lots of land and water to explore, fish, hike, boat, and bike. Raleigh RV owners and camping enthusiasts are also within a sensible driving distance from the Atlantic coast and places running from Myrtle Beach in the south to Virginia Beach in the north.

The Raleigh/Durham metro area itself shouldn't be passed up by those hauling RV trailers on their way to one of the aforementioned spots. Downtown Raleigh is home to the State Capitol building, which is open to the public and offers tours focusing on the state's history and arts, as well as being the active seat of government.
